Speaking to Newsweek, Groban said that after performing on Broadway in The Great Comet from 2016 to 2017, 'I didn't even want a break. I just dove into writing. There are some albums, like the last one, where I don't want to write at all, I just want to be a vocalist. Then there are some where you're pouring out idea after idea. I've had sad albums in the past and I wanted an album that had an uplifting spirit, for my psyche and also for the psyche of listeners. I think we all need that.'[4]
Bridges debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 96,000 album-equivalent units, of which 94,000 were pure album sales, and also became outsold by the fourth studio album by American hip-hop group Brockhampton, Iridescence.[5] It is Groban's ninth US top 10 album.[5] It debuted at number one on the US Top Album Sales chart dated October 6, 2018.[6]

Bridges is Groban’s ninth top 10 on the Billboard 200, and his third to stop one rung shy of the throne. He has also collected a trio of leaders throughout his career. Thus far, none of the songs released from Bridges prior to the album's release have reached the Hot 100, though he has already collected another Top 40 hit on Billboard's adult contemporary listing.
Behind Brockhampton and Groban, no other just-released titles start inside the top 10, and the rest of the spots are filled by albums that have already appeared inside the uppermost area.
Eminem’s surprise release Kamikaze slips slightly to No. 3, followed by fellow hip-hop records by Drake (Scorpion, No. 4), Travis Scott (Astroworld, No. 5) and Post Malone (Beerbongs & Bentleys, No. 6). Last week’s frontrunner, Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty, tumbles to No. 7 in its second frame, and it is quickly followed by Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance at No. 8, Lauren Daigle’s Look Up Child at No. 9 and Ariana Grande’s Sweetener at No. 10.
